Store Monitoring

The store health checklist, in the order that matters.

Most store checklists are alphabetised feature lists. This one is ordered by how much money each item is likely to cost you if it is wrong, and split by how often it is worth checking. Roughly half of it can be automated outright; the rest needs ten minutes of your judgement a month.

Every day — or every few minutes, automatically

These are the checks where hours matter. None of them should be a manual task; all of them can run on a schedule.

  • Orders are still arrivingCompared against a historical baseline for this hour and this day, not against a fixed number. A quiet Tuesday morning is different from a quiet Saturday night.
  • The store responds on your custom domainNot the myshopify.com URL. The custom domain carries the DNS and certificate that actually fail.
  • No product is priced at zero, and no sale price is invertedBoth convert fast and both are invisible from the homepage.
  • Checkout completesA 200 OK on the cart page is not the same as a completed order. Order volume is the proxy that catches this.
  • No bestseller is out of stock while still being advertisedPaid traffic to a sold-out product is the fastest way to spend money on nothing.

Every week

Slower failures. Missing one for a week is annoying; missing one for a quarter is expensive.

  • No broken internal links or missing product imagesDeep pages break silently because nobody browses to them from the homepage.
  • Core Web Vitals have not regressedLCP, CLS and INP on mobile, which is not the same as how the store feels on your laptop.
  • New products have complete titles, descriptions and meta descriptionsThe window where a new product is cheapest to fix is the week it is published.
  • Product schema is present and complete on new pagesMissing structured data removes the product from rich results and from AI shopping answers.
  • Search Console shows no new coverage errorsIndexing problems compound quietly.

Every month

The judgement pass. This is the part worth doing yourself, with the store open in front of you.

  • Walk the full checkout on a phone, on mobile dataIncluding a discount code and a shipping option you do not normally use.
  • Review apps you no longer use and remove themEvery app is a script on the storefront and a potential writer of your prices.
  • Check that promotional copy and sale badges match realityExpired sales that never came down are both a margin and a compliance problem.
  • Read three product pages as a customerNot for errors — for whether they answer the question a buyer would actually ask.
  • Review your alert channels and severity floorsIf you have started ignoring a channel, it is misconfigured rather than unnecessary.

Every quarter, and before every peak

Low-frequency, high-consequence. Two of these have expiry dates, which means they fail on a schedule you can see in advance.

  • SSL certificate expiry is more than 30 days awayAn expired certificate is a full-page browser warning, not a degraded experience.
  • Domain registration expiry is more than 60 days awayRecovery from a lapsed domain takes days. This is the single worst preventable outage.
  • Test a restore of your theme and product dataA backup you have never restored is a hypothesis.
  • Review page speed on your highest-traffic templatesTemplates drift as apps and sections accumulate.
  • Confirm alerts reach a phone, not just an inboxSend a test. The night of an incident is a bad time to discover the webhook expired.

What Cassian™ actually does

Specific checks, with the plan they run on.

Every scan runs 33 deterministic checks per page — titles, meta descriptions, heading hierarchy, alt text, canonicals, Open Graph, Twitter cards, favicons, robots directives, mixed content, hreflang and product schema completeness.

Every plan. 10 pages on Inspector, up to 5,000 on Guardian.

Link and image validation classifies every result as working, redirect, blocked, broken or server error, and skips bot-hostile domains so a blocked social link is never reported as broken.

Every plan. 1 page weekly on Inspector, 500 pages daily on Prime.

Core Web Vitals — LCP, CLS and INP — are measured daily for mobile and desktop separately, with real-user field data from Google where it is available for your domain.

Every plan, including free.

SSL certificate and domain registration expiry are checked daily and alerted on a countdown, so both arrive as a reminder rather than an outage.

Protector and above.

Stock-out and low-stock alerts project days-to-stockout from a 14-day sales velocity that resets at the last restock.

WooCommerce and BigCommerce only — the platforms that expose inventory tracking. Not available on Shopify or Wix.

FAQ

Common questions

What should be on a Shopify store health checklist?
Order the list by cost of failure, not by category. Daily: orders still arriving, store responding on your custom domain, no zero or inverted prices, checkout completing, bestsellers in stock. Weekly: no broken links or missing images, Core Web Vitals steady, new products with complete metadata and product schema, no new Search Console coverage errors. Monthly: walk the checkout on a phone, prune unused apps, verify promotional copy, review alert settings. Quarterly: SSL and domain expiry more than 30 and 60 days out, a tested backup restore, and a confirmed alert path to your phone.
How much of this can be automated?
Everything in the daily and weekly sections, and the expiry checks in the quarterly one. What cannot be automated is judgement — whether a product page answers a buyer’s question, whether promotional copy is confusing, whether the checkout feels right on a phone. That is roughly ten minutes a month once the rest runs itself.
How often should I run a full store audit?
A full audit is a starting point, not a routine. Run one, fix what it finds, and then switch to monitoring — because after the first pass the useful question is not “what is wrong?” but “what changed?” Cassian™ scans weekly on the free plan and daily from Protector, and reports the delta rather than the whole list again.

Imagine if your store could tell you when something's wrong.
